Splish, spash....
Across the river is Llechryd - this
was taken from the Cilgerran road looking across Llechryd bridge.
There are few bridges over the Teifi along this length - a couple
at Cardigan and one each at Llechryd, Cenarth, Newcastle Emlyn and
Henllan are the only ones I know of, so a bridge closure is quite
disruptive.
The minor road to Abercych joins
this road just before the bridge, and is clearly completely under
water. You can still see the bridge parapets, but the road across
the bridge was under about a foot of water when I took this. In
February 2002 you couldn't even see the bridge parapets, so things
can get worse yet.
In the summer I had a close look
at how far the river had to rise to get to these sorts of levels.
To clear the parapets I estimate about 15ft above normal, so in
the photo above the river is about 13 ft higher than summer levels.
It had risen 5 ft in 24 hours. I was told that many of the properties
that can be seen across the river were preparing sandbags.
